Nomad Plastic: Pioneering Sustainable Power Solutions for Marine Conservation

  • SPI Solutions

Marine off-grid, standalone power system configured for “optimized” 24-7 operation

  • System Configurations

    • 2 x 5kW TBB Kinergier 5.0 in parallel single-phase configuration
    • 9kWp DC Coupled PV Solar array
    • 48kWh Pylontech U3000C Energy Storage System
    • Diesel back-up generator
  • System Benefit

The solar hybrid power system provides a clean and quiet alternative to traditional generators, allowing Nomad Plastic to minimize its carbon footprint and further its commitment to environmental stewardship. The system’s benefits include:

    • Reduced greenhouse gas emissions and carbon footprint
    • Lower operating costs through reduced fuel consumption
    • Increased energy efficiency and reliability
    • Enhanced sustainability and environmental responsibility

Nomad Plastic’s project boats are not bound by a specific location, instead, they chart a course through the world’s most vulnerable and pristine marine ecosystems. From the crystal-clear waters of Raja Ampat to the vibrant coral reefs of Indonesia, Nomad Plastic’s team works tirelessly to protect marine biodiversity and promote sustainable practices. Nomad Plastic is more than just a marine conservation organization – it’s a pioneering vision for sustainable living and environmental stewardship. By embracing renewable energy solutions and reducing reliance on diesel fuel, Nomad Plastic is setting a new standard for eco-friendly operations in the marine industry.

Nomad Plastic’s charters take them to various locations across Asia-Pacific, Africa, and the rest of the world, wherever the plastic and biodiversity crises are most tangible and severe. Their mission is to empower sustainable change in these regions, working with local communities and promoting eco-friendly practices.

Their model, which has been successfully implemented in their initial project in Indonesia, aims to achieve the following impact goals:

    • Environmental: Plastic waste reduction, collection, and transformation; CO2 emissions reduction through lower carbon fuel and avoided emissions; biodiversity protection through the creation of Marine Protected Areas and mangrove restoration.
    • Social: Jobs creation, improvement of living and working conditions (health, hygiene, salary); education of local communities through workshops and empowerment.
    • Economic: Revenue generated from new resilient and sustainable local businesses.

Nomad Plastic’s initial project, launched in collaboration with Nomad Archipelago, demonstrates the effectiveness of their model. By leveraging a local liveaboard business, they have been able to educate communities about plastic pollution, allocate a budget for Marine Protected Areas and community engagement, and promote ecosystem regeneration. By integrating renewable energy solutions and reducing reliance on diesel fuel, Nomad Plastic is empowering sustainable marine conservation and setting a new standard for eco-friendly operations in the marine industry.
